    History:

    History here

As to game play specifics - Alistair remained a Grey Warden, with Neria putting Anora on the Throne. He was unhardened. He did take part (with persuasion) in the Dark Ritual with Morrigan.

He remained with Neria as her lover/husband.

He was the one saved in the Fade in Dragon Age; Inquisition, with the Inquisitor sacrificing Hawke..

    Personality:

Alistair, in many ways has let titles dictate his life. “That annoying recruit that won’t shut up” “The kid that sleeps with the dogs” “Bastard son of the king”. It was only when he was found by Duncan, and conscripted into the Grey Wardens that Alistair even began to find out who he was, and ‘Warden’ was actually a title he found he rather liked. It was his, he earned it on his wit and his attitude. Someone finally appreciated him.

Ever since he was a little boy, he’s spent his whole life hiding who he was. His aunt demanded his removal from his home, the only place he ever felt at home, because she thought he was her husband’s bastard son. Throughout his training, he was the goofy one, the annoying one who brought attention to himself with his humour, his pranks, but his skills were as a rule unremarkable. As a Warden, he settled in quickly, loving the camaraderie, loving the fact that he was doing good in fighting darkspawn, and feeling at home for once with a new family. It was the best thing he had ever done.

He’s always been the kind of person to shy away from responsibility. All his life he’s been a follower; he was happy being a Templar recruit to a point - he enjoyed the camaraderie in the barracks, though he was never happy about what he’d have to do to mages, he was content when he joined the Wardens to follow Duncan, and even though after Duncan was killed, he was the senior Warden in Ferelden, he was happy to sit back and let Surana lead, and make all the decisions. At first you think it was because of his grief at Duncan’s death, but you do realise that it is actually more of a personality trait - he genuinely doesn’t believe he can lead. Throughout the first game, he actively backs away from any choice that would put him in a position of leadership, including ultimately, the throne of Ferelden.

Alistair has a tendency to fall back on humour as a defense mechanism. He has a reputation of facing the worst situation with a badly (or well, depending on your point of view) pun or observation. But it works for him. Many a situation has been diffused by his odd humour. Of course, it doesn’t always go as he intended, but it does for the most part.

He cherishes those he considers family. He may not have known his royal half-brother well, but he is determined in his desire to see him have a proper funeral, burned on a pyre as he should be. When Surana let his nephew Connor die, rather than try and remove the demon from him, he was as angry as he had ever been (in game, you lose a LOT of approval with Alistair for that move). Having never had much of an actual family, he clings to those he cares about. Surana - she is special though. She’s the first woman he fell in love with, his first everything, and the woman he would do absolutely anything for.

However, throughout the games you do see him gradually growing up, accepting responsibility. When faced with the Grey Wardens seemingly going mad en masse, he chose to do the right thing and stand up against it, even though it lead to him being called a traitor. He sought out help from the Inquisition via an intermediary, and when faced with the likelyhood of his death in the Fade he was willing to stand up and meet it head on. Now, he is left as the senior Warden in Orlais, and likely to be Warden-Commander and now? He’s ready for it. He has finally grown up enough that he can embrace the responsibility, and not look for someone else to take it.

How will Alistair cope with Teleios? With Surana there, he won’t really care. He’s been separated from the only woman he has ever, and will ever love for over a year, so he will cope with whatever they throw at him. He won’t mind his so called crimes - he’s done what he’s done in an attempt to do good, and there is nothing he is ashamed of having done in his life. Well, apart from that one time in the barracks...

    Powers/Abilities:

Although Alistair never finished his Templar training, he does use many of the abilities Templar do, raising doubts as to whether Templars actually need lyrium to use their abilities, or if lyrium just enhances them.

    Templar abilities include:

Righteous Strike: Each of the templar’s melee hits against an enemy spell caster drains its mana.

Cleanse Area: The templar can purge the area of magic

Holy Smite: The Templar inflicts spirit damage on the target and other nearby enemies.

He’s a highly skilled warrior, falling back on the traditional role of ‘tank’, using a sword and shield to draw as much attention to him. As a Warden, he can also sense Darkspawn approaching.

    Concept:

Alistair’s most recognizable trait is his ability to deflect anything with humour. Situation deadly, world about to end? A quip is obviously the right way to go. However, he’s Ferelden’s oldest warden (though not senior - that lies with the Hero of Ferelden), so at least he knows what he is doing there.

He considers the fact that he wasn’t made king a lucky escape - he feels the only thing that he had in common with his father was some blood - he wasn’t raised to be a king, the nobles would eat him alive. Let Anora, who at least wanted to be Queen, carry on with the job - she is doing a good job, and he is much happier where he is.

He suffers some abandonment issues - his father, King Maric left him with Arl Eamon to look after, and he believes his mother was a servant girl whom Maric managed to get pregnant, who died when he was young. Sent to the Chantry at age ten when Eamon’s wife couldn’t stand him being around, he has struggled for acceptance in his life; at least, until he became a Warden. Finally, he found something he was good at, where he felt at home, and he was doing some good. All the things he’d ever wanted.

Before, he was terribly naive, and in some ways that hasn’t changed, but he’s seen too much, been through too much to be that same almost-man he was in Origins. He’s taken part in the dark ritual with Morrigan, so technically he is a father - but he doesn’t feel like it, because Morrigan wanted to raise her son on her own. He felt like he was betraying himself a little, as he felt as if he were a younger version of his father, but Wardens do what they must to win, after all.

He is still shy around women - he doesn’t believe in sleeping with them for the sake of having sex, so he’s still relatively easy to embarrass - though likely less so than Cullen!

    Since U Been Gone:

At the total risk of utterly jossing myself, because the way they left things was so obviously a hook for a dlc/sequel.

Alistair left his fellow Orleasian Grey Wardens to the Inquisition’s tender mercies, intending on going to Weisshaupt to tell the Grey Warden leadership exactly what had happened at Adamant, and why Corypheus had done what he had done.

However, the Grey Warden leadership was less than impressed by how the Orleasian Wardens had handled themselves. As the surviving senior Warden, Alistair was held responsible, and his actions, disobeying Clarel’s orders and fighting against his comrades were used against him as a disciplinary matter. Privately, he thought it was just an excuse they’d concocted to get him out of the way. With the Hero missing, it was a good chance to get rid of the other Warden who lived through the Blight.

Terrified for what that meant for Thedas, he protested against his treatment, but ended up being thrown into a cell. Thankfully Alistair had a few supporters amongst the Weisshaupt Wardens who realised they couldn’t change the leaderships mind, but they could do something else - help Alistair escape.

Barely making it out of there with his life, he made his way back across Thedas, pursued by the agents of the Wardens. Fearing what had happened, he headed for the only place that he felt safe, that would take him seriously - Skyhold.

    Recruitment:

After his escape from Weisshaupt, he will head to Skyhold, so his recruitment will be easy - though whether he’s a full member of the Inquisition or a Warden representative based there is another matter. - something to be played out perhaps.

    Plot preferences:

I want to learn more about how Alistair got to know Hawke, and how he will fit into the Inquistion, especially if we get the Morrigan that is on reserve - that friendship/whatever will be fascinating to play out. He’ll have an interesting dynamic with all the other cast, especially former Templars!

I want to learn more about what happened to the Wardens, and where they go from here as well. It will be interesting to play out.
